DateReport
2004-01-12Today it is cold at 13.4C and very overcast with low cumulus clouds. We expect rain later today and strong winds.
2003-06-12Weather Report for June 12, 2003 We are getting into summer. It is hot and getting more humid. Still, this is the coolest spring in the past eight years. Hopefully, it will stay way.
2003-05-29We've been having very comfortable weather for the most part. We had a warm day (35 degrees) on the 24th but the next three days did not break 25 degrees. Then we were hit with a ferocious sharav on the 29th. The temperature went up quickly to 39 degrees with 20% humidity. The sharav broke the next, luckily.
2003-05-22Weather report May 16-22, 2003 Thursday was very warm, 34 degrees, and humide (100%) humidity. There was markedly lower barometric pressure last Friday but the rest of the week higher with warm temps and higher humidity. Evenings are beautiful and comfortable. You see lots of people out walking and playing in the evening. Last Monday was Lag B'Omer which is a Jewish holiday marking the half-way point between Passover and Shavuot. Unfortunately it has become a holiday of pyromaniacs as family and friends come together to make bonfires. The air quality is completely destroyed. Particulate levels in the air are 300 times the allowable limit. The day after is all hazy. Yech!
2003-05-15Weather report May 8-15, 2003 The week started off quite hot: 32 degrees. It was the end of a sharav. The humidity came back and it was hot and sticky; a little test of what is coming this summer. There is a perfect correlation between the wind direction and the temp. and humidity. When the wind is coming from the east, it's a sharav. When the wind is from the west, it's cooler and more humid.
2003-05-09Weather report for May 2-8 The atmosphere is heating up. Friday was beautiful but on Saturday another sharav started. The high temp on Sunday was 36 with 15% humidity. That sharav broke on Monday, and conditions were moister and cooler. Yesterday, yet another sharav started. The change in weather was quite dramatic on the weather station. It had been a hot afternoon with humidity of 30% and the winds from the E (the Jordanian desert). Then at 4:30 p.m. the winds shifted to the NW (Mediterranean) and the temperature dropped and the humidity went up 20%. This all happened in about 15 minutes.
2003-05-01Weather report for April 25 - May 1 Last Friday was the end of another sharav. It was dry and dusty. On Saturday the sharav broke with torrential rainstorms and lower temps. Sunday also had thunderstorms in the am and pm. By Monday the weather stabilized and we had three nice, cool dry days in a row.
2003-04-24Weather report for April 18-24, 2003 The hot weather is here. We had a sharav at the start of the week. It was dry with high clouds. It broke after one day as nimbostratus and cumulonimbus clouds moved in. It rained Saturday night and Sunday. The temperatures fell and it got down to about 8 degrees at night.
2003-04-17Weather report for April 11-17, 2003 We continue to be affected by a cold air mass. It’s been cool all week with some scattered showers early in the week. I just know that hot weather is coming!
2003-04-10Weather report for April 4-10, 2003 Another sharav was building last Friday. The daily highs were around 36 degrees. Friday was the first day this year that I had to use air conditioning. On Sunday the heat broke. The high temps declined to about 20 degrees and it was sweater weather. Very pleasant!
2003-04-04Weather report for March 28-April 3 The weather over last weekend was pretty uneventful. It was partly cloudy with warm sunshine and on the dry side. On Tuesday, it started to get hot with a high in the low 30's and a rh of 27%. It was the start of a Hamsin. On Thursday the Hamsin decreased somewhat. It was very hazy and high's were in the upper twenties. The rh was pretty high at about 80%. It's funny to see people not expecting the hot weather and walking around in heavy sweaters.
2003-03-28Weather Report for March 21-27, 2003 We were hit by a massive storm last Wednesday. I remember seeing the low pressure system on CNN last week. It was mostly steady showers for over 24 hours with some thunderstorms and gravel sized hail. It's unusual to have such a large storm this late in the year. The Kinneret continues to rise and is now about 1.7m from maximum.
2003-03-21We're getting those wild swings in weather. On Saturday it was literally hot out, 27 degrees. We were out in shorts hiking in the Carmel Mountains. It clear and sunny. Temps dropped the next day and it clouded up. On Tuesday we had a sandstorm. The sky was a brown haze and it was very windy. We then had a period of intermittent showers that lasted 5 days. The past few days have been cold at night. We've been following the war in Iraq and noting the important role of weather. The sandstorms can ground critical aircraft. There was talk here of suspending public weather forecasts because they might be used by terrorists or Saddam. I don't think that has happened.
2003-03-14Weather report for March 7 - March 13 It was dry from Friday to Monday. Most days were cloudy with a few days looking like rain but no rain falling around here. A storm came through on Tuesday and it rained almost 2 cm. The rain continued on Wednesday. Temps dropped by 8 degrees during the storm. We are on vacation due to threat of war on Iraq. It looks like the uncertainty will be over in the next few days.
2003-03-06Weather Report for February 28 to March 6, 2003 It was a generally drier week this past week. It only rained on Thursday. Temperatures rose until they peaked at a high of 23 on Sunday. The high temps for the rest of the week were around 18. Barometric pressure was pretty stable and only varied about 20 hPa during the week. Sunday was very dry with a humidity of 30%. I could really feel it in my lips. The humidity rose back up to normal levels later in the week.
2003-02-27Weather report for February 21-27. Another very rainy week. A fierce storm arrived on the 24th and brought rain, high winds, and snow to Jerusalem and other high elevations. Thousands of people are flocking to Mount Hermon to go skiing and play in the snow. The Kinneret has risen about 2.5 meters this winter. It is about 2 meters below it's maximum. I'm going skiing at the Hermon next week!
2003-02-21Weather report for Feb. 14-20, 2003 The winter weather continues. We had showers and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday. Sunday was warmer with clear to partly cloudy skies. The warm weather (sharav) continued into Tuesday. By Wednesday we were back into the rain, cold and high winds. On Thursday, we had thunderstorms again with hard driving rain. There's talk of snow in Jerusalem and the high elevations next week. I'm looking for my gloves!
2003-02-16Weather report for Feb. 7-13. The rain keeps on coming. At this point the whole country has received over 100% of its precipitation to date. This is welcome relief from the below average precipitation of the last four years. In our neighborhood, we've had rain five out of the seven past days. It's been mainly intermittent showers but we've also had a few small thunderstorms. All is not well. The rain has overwhelmed the sanitary sewer system and resulted in hundreds of tons of raw sewage to be dumped in the Mediterranean. They should have the problem fixed soon.
2003-02-06Weather report for January 31- February 6 The week started beautifully. Skies were clear. Temperatures were cold. On Sunday and Monday we had very strange weather. It was clear in morning but in the afternoon it became very hazy. It was either fog or a high dust storm. On Wednesday we had thunderstorms with hail. A waterspout was seen off the coast near Herzliya. After the storms, the sky cleared again but temperatures were colder.
2003-01-30Weather Report for January 24-30, 2003 The rain keeps on coming. We've had a few days of thunderstorms. They tend to be short with torrential downpours. We've had a variety of cloud types.
2003-01-23Weather Report for January 17-23,2003 It continues to rain. Rain has been light. Skies tend to clear in evening. Dew tends to be moderate to heavy. All types of clouds: stratus, nimbostratus, cumulus, altocumulus.
2003-01-16Weather Report for January 10- January 16, 2003 For a few days were basking in late summer weather. A strong warm front came through giving us high temperatures of up to 26 degrees. It was very dry. This lasted two days and cooler air arrived with large cumulus clouds. A low in the area brought rainy weather at the end of the week. Temperatures declined and we received almost a cm of rain.
2003-01-09Weather Report for January 3 - January 9, 2003 The beginning of the week was very pleasant. Cool days and cooler evenings. Skies have been partly cloudy with cirrus, cumulus and altocumulus clouds. On Tuesday we say absolutely beautiful mare’s tail cirrus. Very heavy dew each night.
2003-01-02Weather report for December 27 - January 2, 2003 We've had another soggy week. It started with nice weather; cool but no rain. By last Monday the heavy clouds started rolling in. We had thunderstorms Monday night. We had more lightning and showers Thursday night.
2002-12-19It's been a very stormy week. It has rained six of the last seven days. We first had a cold front pass through with thunderstorms. Temps got as low as 7 degrees last Friday. Within thirty-six hours a warm front arrived with longer, steadier cloudbursts. The rain is really needed. Since Dec. 4, we have received almost 10 cm. As expected, the winds were from the north during the cold front and then shifted to the to the south as the warm fron passed.
2002-12-13We had the first substantial winter storm blow through this week. It lasted about three days. It was actually a series of small storms. There were a few small thunderstorms. As usual, most of the rain was short but torrential. We recorded 26 mm of rain in total. It was nice to hear the patter of drops on the roof. A cold front arrived with storm reducing the low temperatures about 5 degrees. The air is clear and crisp. I'm not expecting any snow for Christmas.
2002-12-06High temperatures generally held steady this past week in the low 20's. the lows dropped from 17 down to 15. Humidity during the day was quite high reaching almost 90%. There was no rain. We saw a lot of alto cumulus and cirrus clouds. There could be rain coming. The barometric pressure has been dropping the past few days.
2002-11-28Winter continues to approach. Temps continue to be cool. I need a light jacket in the morning and evening. I turned on the heat in our house for the first time this year last night. We had a nice little thunderstorm yesterday. Cirrus and stratus clouds are making for spectacular sunsets.
2002-11-21Incredible weather if you like to hike, bike and generally be outside. Very low humidity, 15%, virtually no dew. We usually have about 60% humidity this time of year. Lots of people with chapped lips and nosebleeds. High temps were around 30 degrees with lows around 13 degrees. A sweater is necessary at night. Some days were breezy with winds out of the NNE. The source of the wind explains the dry air as it is coming from Syria, Turkey and Iraq. The problem is we need rain!!! Normally, we would have had many more storms by now.
2002-11-14Summer has not given up yet. We had a short sharav last Saturday. It was quite warm, about 30 degrees during the afternoon and dry. Clouds increased throughout the day and we felt a few raindrops in the late afternoon. We had a short sprinkle later in the evening. The cold front that ended the sharav has lasted the rest of the week. It's been wonderfully cool during the day and chilly at night, 17 -20 degrees. We had another short rain shower a few days ago. I now need to wear a light jacket in the morning and evening. I'm looking forward to the big thunderstorms.
2002-11-10Fall continues to manifest itself beautifully. I went to a party the other night and for the first time in six months I felt chilled outside in a garden. The air is fresh and clean unlike the summer months. By the way, I just read an article in the newspaper about air quality in the Mediterranean basin. It said the air currents concentrate all the pollution from as far away as Indonesia and Europe into our region. This makes sense as the air in August can be cut with a knife. A front came through on the 11th and brought thunderstorms. Class virtually stopped as everyone got excited about the rain, thunder and lightning. The lightning actually knocked out our phone system for awhile. Since the front passed through it's been really nice with some cumulus and cirrus clouds. We do need more rain, though!
2002-10-31Winter continues to manifest itself. Thursday night, I woke up in the middle of the night and watched heat lightning play across the sky. In the morning, it smelled like rain but no rain fell in this area. I read in the newspaper the next day that there was flooding in the Negev desert south of us. Many roads cross normally dry wadis in the Negev. Several roads were closed due to flooding. Nights are cool enough to require sweaters and the dew is quite heavy.
2002-10-17Weather report for October 11-17 As usual, winter has roared in like a lion. The weather before October 15 was generally warm and sticky. Then on the night of October 15, we had thunderstorms roll in from the Mediterranean. Our weather station is temporarily down, so I don't know how much it rained. The storms continued on the 16th and were quite heavy at times. Everyone was fascinated by the first heavy rains of the year.
2002-10-11Weather report for October 4-10. What beautiful weather! Cool mornings, warm afternoons, cool evenings. It's shorts weather during the day and just barely shorts weather at night. We haven't had the air conditioning on for a week. Most days start with cumulus and cirrus clouds which burn away in the middle of the day. We are at the very end of the summer.
2002-10-04Weather report for September 27 to October 4. In the past week, we've experienced a very typical fall weather pattern. Last Sunday was the start of a heat wave (sharav) which lasted until Wednesday afternoon. Then a cold front moved in and cooled everything off. The cold front created the first substantial rain storm of the year. It was a nice soft shower that lasted for about an hour. In the past few weeks, we've seen an increase in the cloud cover in the mornings and evenings. There are more stratus clouds at these times of day.
2002-09-27Weather report for September 20-26. We are just ending the holiday of Sukkot. Weather is important to this holiday because we spend a lot of time outdoors in our sukkahs. A sukkah is a temporary little hut which reminds Jews of the 40 years spent wandering in the wilderness. We eat as many meals as possible in the sukkah. For most of the week it was a little warm to be in the sukkah. Yesterday, it was much drier and cooler and lovely to be outside. We didn't turn on the air conditioner last night for the first time since last May. There has been dew this past week and the sky has been filled with altocumulus clouds in the morning.
2002-09-20Weather report for Sept.13-19 More of the same early fall weather. Warm and muggy. A mild sharav hit us last Monday. High temps reached 30 degrees plus. The humidity also declined to about 39%. The evenings were quite nice for a few days. The temperatures have been going down the past few days which coincides with a the wind direction shifting from the north to the west.
2002-09-12Weather report for September 6 - 12 It's still hot and humid. Temperatures were about the same as last week. Some short sprinkles on Saturday. It's nice to see some dark clouds again. The humidity lessened toward the end of the of the week as a sharav was about to begin.
2002-09-05Weather report for August 30 - Sept. 5 Summer is not over yet. It's still very hot and sticky. The air almost feels stale as if it hasn't moved in weeks. The humidity ranged from 60% to 90%. Morning and evening cumulus clouds daily.
2002-08-30Weather report for August 23-August 29- What a hot, sticky week! Hi temps were about 30 degrees every day. Humidity consistenly ranged from 70-90%. Every time you walk outside it feels like you're entering a sauna. Still gettingl lots of cumulus clouds in a.m. and p.m. If you're at the beach it's great weather. As school has started, there's not much time for that!
2002-08-23Weather report for August 16-22. Pretty monotonous weather. Still very humid and sticky. The air conditioners run constantly. Almost exlcusively big, puffy cumulus clouds especially in morning and evening. I'm looking forward to fall.
2002-08-16The week started very hot and humid. The air was just thick even in the middle of the night. Yuck! The past few days have not been quite as hot and the humidity has gone done. We are still seeing many beautiful cumulus clouds. They are especially pretty at sunset when they are colored orange, purple and pink. Sunday we actually had a few drops of rain fall which is rare.
2002-06-13What an extreme weather change we've had this week. It was a strong sharav (heat wave)with temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius here. We saw the temperature rise 10 degrees in two morning hours last Wednesday. It was hot and dry until two days ago. We're back to some reasonable weather now and don't necessarily need the air conditioning. Hopefully, it won't be a very hot summer.
2002-06-06The weather the past week continued to be cool and very comfortable. Humidity has been generally dropping all week. Prevailing winds were from northwest for most of the week. Humidity has been dropping, temperatures have risen and winds have shifted to be from the southeast. Looks like a sharav from the Arabian peninsula is approaching.
2002-05-31Weather report May 24-30. It has been another fantastic week of weather. It has been generally cool with comfortable humidity. We have had a couple warmer days with highs in middle twenties. Humidity has generally been below 80% in the afternoons. The clouds have been beautiful. In the morning small cumulus have dotted the sky with large flat bottomed cumulus in the afternoon. Barometric pressure has had little variance.
2002-05-24Weather report May 17-23. About the same temps as last week. Very pleasant. No rain this week. Humidity did not decrease at night as much early in the week.
2002-05-17Weather report for May 10-16. Temps higher than last week with Friday's high at 30 degrees. Some early morning rain on Thursday.
2002-05-10Weather report for May 3-9. Temps were a little warmer this week breaking 20 degrees everyday. Humidity ranges about the same as last week. Some rain on Sunday and Wednesday.
2002-05-03Weather Report for April 26 to May 2. What great weather! It's been cooler than usual. Most days I need to wear a light jacket in the morning. It gets warmer as the day goes on. It's usually partly cloudy in the morning with cumulus and altocumulus clouds. This morning there were actually some well developed cumulus clouds. The humidity has been low. Great times to be outside.
2002-04-25Weather report for April 25, 2002 It's been cooler than normal for about 6 days. It feels more like February. It's been overcast a few days here and there. We've also had some rain which is really rare. Before the cool weather, we had another Sharave. It was warm, dry and dusty. The weather has actually been fairly comfortable, but I just know that hot, humid weather is just around the corner.
2002-04-19Weather report for April 12-18. The middle and end of the week were on the cool side. The middle of the week was warm with humidities less than 30%. Some rain early Friday morning.
2002-04-12Weather report for April 5-11. It was a dry week. Friday and Saturday were very low humidity, less than 30 percent. There was a good correlation between higher temps, low humidity and low barometric pressure on Friday and Saturday. Most of the week was cool with high humidity and higher air pressure.
2002-04-05Weather report for March 29-April 4. About the same cool weather as last week with a bit more rain. There was a nice correlation between temperarture, humidity, and barometric pressure. As temp went up, humidity and pressure declined over several hours. Wednesday had warmer temps with a high of 26 degrees.
2002-03-29Weather report for March 22-28. The nice weather of the past week is continuing. The beginning of this week was warmer than last week with more days with temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius. When wind blew from west and south, temperatures rose. West and south winds were also drier than north and east winds. West and south winds also correlated with lower barometric pressure. Some rain has fallen over the past few days.
2002-03-22Weather report for March 15-21. Temps have cooled considerably. Highest temp for the week was 23 degrees with most days not breaking 19. Winds are mostly out of the north. Humidities are generally higher this week and mostly more than 80%. We had a few sprinkles on Sunday and Thursday.
2002-03-14Weather report for March 8 -14 We've been enjoying the warm weather for a about a week. High temps have been around 28 degrees and the humidity has been around 30%. On Wednesday there were signs the Sharav was breaking. It sprinkled a little last night and the skies have been overcast. The humidity has slowly been rising the past few days and the temperatures have been going down. Our taste of the desert is about to end.
2002-03-07Weather report for March 1-7 Generally cool, pleasant weather in the first half of this week. Generally cloudy in the morning with clearing in the afternoon. On a couple days we had morning fog. Hi temps were up to almost 18 degrees Celsius. Humidity was 77-88 %. Then we had a Sharav start on Wednesday. Overnight, the temperature rose 11 degrees and the humidity dropped 60%. A Sharav is a weather condition when the prevailing winds from the west weaken and the wind comes from the southeast, from the Arabian peninsula. These winds are hot and dry. All of a sudden it became shorts and sandals weather.
2002-02-28Weather report for February 22-28. Continued cool temps. Very pleasant weather. Humidity continues to be low. Cirrostratus clouds in morning and evening. They say a sharav is coming.
2002-02-22It's been a nice week weatherwise. Cool mornings and warm afternoons. I don't need my sweater after 12:30. It's been on the dry side with relative humidities in the upper thirties and no rain. Some cloudiness in the mornings and afternoons.
2002-02-15We've had a nice variety of weather this week. The week started with some very springy warm dry weather. A cold front came through last Monday like a lion. We recorded wind gusts up to 60 km per hour. We had showers over three days, mainly at night. There were a couple good thunderstorms. Yesterday, the skies cleared and the humidity went down. Today was a beautiful, cool, sunny day. I hope the weather holds because we have a three day weekend starting this afternoon.
2002-01-31Similar weather to last week. Warmer, dry weather early in week. Rain on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Rising barometer late in week correlated with some really nice weather. Spring is coming!
2002-01-24Last Friday was a beautiful day with a high in the upper teens. Interestingly, the humidity was about 28%. We saw this pattern late in the week also. Friday night was very cold but it warmed up a little over the next few days. It also rained for two and half days. It was a nice gently rain. By the end of the week, temps crept up again.
2002-01-17The rains continue! It continues to be cold. A cold front passed through last week and drove temps. down to about 5 degrees C. It's warmed up since then with highs in the upper teens. We have had everything from pea sized hail to soft, gentle rains that have lasted for hours. We are ahead of our average annual rainfall. The government is considering canceling some desalination projects. This is a bad move. The Kinneret is still well below the danger line. The sun is now shining. I think I'll go out and play!
2001-12-27Big range temperatures this week. The range was from 9 to 22 degrees Celsius. Rain registered on the rain gauge but it was exactly the same amounts at around 1:00 a.m. on four different nights. Humidity ranged from 40% to 100%.
2001-12-21We're moving slowly into winter. Last night it got down to 8 degrees Celsius. The highs have been in the upper teens. We're still getting rain, about 20 mm in the past week. Everything is very green. We have two weeks of vacation starting today, YEAH!!
2001-12-14It's been pretty warm this week; highs in the low to mid twenties. We had a little rain on Saturday and Sunday; about 8 mm total. It's very pleasant weather, especially if you like sweaters. Winds have been mainly out of the west. Nice weather for walks and bike rides.
2001-12-07When it rains here it REALLY pours! We had a cold front come through three days ago that dumped a bunch of water. According to our rain gauge, we received 103 mm in 56 hours. Some parts of the country received 300 mm in as little as 12 hours. There was a lot of flooding. We even had some water in our basement. It's cold now. The temperature has ranged from 11 to 16 Celsius. We've seen beautiful cloud formations. Cumulonimbus, nimbostratus, cumulus, altocumulus. The Sea of Galilee has risen 5 cm but it is still 1.8 m below the red line (the line it's not supposed to be allowed to go under). Hanuka starts Sunday. We can use a little festiveness to temper the political problems.
2001-11-30What a contrast to summer weather. It s been cool, cloudy and rainy some days. We ve had about 5.5 mm of rain this week. We ve had a whole range of cloud types from cirrus to cumulonimbus. Temperature has ranged from 10 degrees Celsius to 21 degrees Celsius. It s hard to plan outdoor activities but I love wearing my sweaters.
2001-11-22Winter is here in full force. Temperatures have ranged from 9-19 degrees Celsius. We re turning on the heat in the evenings. It s rained a few times with a weekly total of about 8 mm. The vegetation is very green. Lawns look good. The government is still encouraging water conservation as the Sea of Galilee is still in danger of becoming salinated.
2001-10-07We're seeing the last days of summer. It got up to 28 degrees one day this week. We saw an interesting phenomena on Monday. Winds are usually from the west but the winds for a few hours swung around to the north, which is not that common. Humidity at this time dropped to 50%. The air must have been coming from Syria. Wind speeds were average. We're seeing more clouds in the morning. No rain yet. There will be an interesting demonstration next week. An environmental organization will try to link hands around Israel's largest lake, the Kinneret. It is about 30 kilometers in perimeter. There will be environmental seminars at all 20 beaches. Unfortunately, due to security, we can't go. Oh well.
2001-09-28It's cooling off and fall is taking hold. We haven't needed air conditioning during the night for the past few nights. It is more comfortable sleeping with a fan. Low temps were down to 19 degrees while the highs were about 28 degrees. Barometric pressure was generally higher the past week than the week before. Relative humidity was generally lower this past week. It was gustier this past week with winds up to 15 km/hr versus 8 km/hr the week before. Tomorrow the holiday of Sukkot ends. The weather was generally conducive to being in the Sukkah. More clouds have been building in the evenings. The European weather service is forecasting average to above average rain this winter. I hope they are right!
2001-09-14We continue to move steadily into fall. When I first came here I was not sensitive to the changing seasons because they were not as pronounced as back in the U.S. I've started to notice subtle things like the amount of dew on my car windshield. A very significant change occurred this week. We heat our water with passive solar systems. On Wednesday morning I got into the shower and there was no hot water. Solar intensity is diminishing and the cooler nights are cooling our water tank. Now we have to switch on the electric heater. It will be interesting to see in the future if this consistently occurs around the fall equinox. As far the week's weather is concerned, temperatures ranged from 21 to 28 degrees Celsius. Humidity was consistently higher this past week versus two weeks ago. That probably explains the dew on my windshield. Mornings have some cumulus clouds which burn off in the afternoon and reform in the early evening.
2001-09-07It's been a little cooler this week. We've actually tried opening the windows in the classroom in the morning. It is still too hot to leave them open. Two weeks ago the high temps got up into the low 30's. Last week there was only one day over 30. The other six days it's been 28 or 29. It's also been less humid in the past week. People are going to parks more in the late afternoon when it's cooled off. We're getting more cloud formation in the late afternoon. The cumulus clouds are so pretty with the setting sun; all shades of grey and white. The next two weeks are full of Jewish holidays. It's a very festive time. The Jewish holidays are closely connected to the seasons and weather. Generally, we start to get rain during or just after Sukkot which falls on October 2. Happy New Year to all!
2001-09-02I started playing around with the strip charts in the Health program and found some nice patterns by comparing week long intervals of data. The outside temperature did not vary much. The high temp two weeks ago was only 1 degree C. less than last week. The low for the week varied by only 1.5 degrees. The humidity readings were more striking. The humidity was consistently 10 to 20% greater last week than two weeks ago. It definitely felt drier two weeks ago. It was also interesting that the dew point consistently lower two weeks ago versus last week. Solar radiation was peaks were lower last week than the week before. Today is beautiful. Nice 3 km breeze off the ocean, about 27 degrees and 60% humidity. Tomorrow begins the holiday of Sukkot. Everyone build little booths (sukkah)in their yards and has festive meals inside. Some people sleep in their sukkahs. The holiday lasts 8 days. Unfortunately, we only get one day off from school.
2001-08-31After a little hot spell, the weather has cooled a bit. It's still warm in the afternoon but evenings are lovely. High temps have been in the upper 20's. Still sticky. Relative humidity is peaking in the afternoon at about 90%. It's still air conditioning at night-time weather. We're hoping for rain soon. We really need it. Nationwide water conservation efforts have paid off and no bans on garden watering have been instituted. Earlier in the year the government was warning of drinking water shortages. The water situation is still very serious with the Sea of Galilee very, very low.
2001-05-22 Weather has been very consistent. High temps in the upper 20's and lows in the middle teens. Great weather. Definitely cooler than in past years. Humidity is also not as high. Excellent for swimming, picnicing, etc.
2001-05-14 The week started out cool and less humid. By the end of the week, humidity was increasing and the temperature was rising. The high temperature for most of the week was 26 degrees. On Sunday, the high was over 30 degrees. This is the weather we're accustomed to in late May. Scattered clouds continue in morning and late afternoon. We have started up the air conditioning again, more for the sticky humidity than for temperature.
2001-05-07 The temperature continue to unseasonably cool. I'm not complaining. We did have another small dust storm last week. The sky was yellow and you could feel the grit in your teeth. We did not have the high temperatures usually associated with a sharav. I hope it continues to the end of June.
2001-04-30 More wacky weather. The temperatures starting rising on April 27. The peak was on the following Tuesday. It was a super "Sharav". The sky in the afternoon was literally yellow. In the middle of the night, a huge thunderstorm broke dumping as much as 20 cm in 5 hours. We never get rain in May. Unfortunately, my gutters were clogged and I had a small flood in my house. An artifact of global warming? I cleaned my gutters right away!
2001-03-12 It continues to warm up. I have turned off the heat at night at home. We're going to put away the heavy blankets. A few sprinkles here and there but no major storms. The orange trees are blossoming and the scent is terrific, like perfume. The birds and insects are mating. The high school students are forming couples.
2001-03-05 Spring is really here. Very warm temps. with highs as high as 20 degrees C. Very dry outside. Not seeing so much dew in the morning. No rain. Right now we are finishing a unit on rocks and minerals. We had a great field trip to a cave where we saw stalactites and stalagmites. We also planted olive trees on campus. Dr. Halter also contributed to the purchase of the trees.
2001-02-28 It's that time of year again for the "hamsin". We get warm, dry winds from Saudia Arabia. The high temps. in the beginning of the week were as high as 29 degrees. The humidity is way down. Evenings are still cool with lows between 9 and 14. The rain should be tapering off now. Purim is coming! Spring is coming!
2001-02-19 Winter carries on. We had small amounts of rain Tuesday through Thursday. Highs in upper teens and lows down to about 8 degrees. It's supposed to warm up next week. We'll see.
2001-02-12 Generally cool this week with a fair amount of rain (for these parts). It rained on Saturday about 3 cm. We need the rain. Temperatures have ranged from about 8 degrees C. to 27 degrees C. Wide range of cloud types: Cumulonimbus to cirrus. I know I shouldn't complain, but I am ready for warmer weather.
2001-02-05 Lot of rain this week. Small amounts of rain fell Sunday - Tuesday. On Wednesday we had a larger storm that dumped 2.7 cm of rain. The past few days have been warmer and sunny. I wish it was like this in July.
2001-01-29 More cool, cloudy weather. We've had rain off and on for the past few days. Beautiful storm cells pass through, dropping rain some places and not others. All sorts of clouds. Lows around 5 degrees C. with highs around 20 degrees C. on sunny afternoons. Big election tomorrow. We will probably have a new Prime Minister.
2001-01-22 We had quite a bit of rain early last week. It is generally cool with a few warmer days. When the sun is out, it's lovely. We are seeing many types of birds pass through on their migration. For the first time I've seen flocks of cormorants. The days are getting longer!!!
2001-01-15 The start of this week was rather dry and hot, the sky wasn1t too cloudy, and no winter was expected. Then, around Tuesday, their came rain predictions. Everything stayed the same into Wednesday, but the temperatures went down a little. Thursday was a damp day, with not too much of a change. Then, on Thursday evening, the sky clouded and rain began falling, softly at first. Throughout Thursday night, the rain halted and then continued several times, increasing by a little. The real change was when thunder and rain storms began on Friday morning. The storms were not too harsh, but significant enough. This kind of wet weather continued until Saturday evening and then halted, for a while. The predictions for next week are a slight rise in the temperatures but let1s hope the rain will come back soon, because we sure need it. Boaz Chandrasekhar, 6B Science 20/1/2001
2001-01-09 It's still winter. Very cool temps ranging from about 9 degrees C. to upper teens. Definitely sweater weather. Generally partly cloudy with cumulus, cirrus and stratus clouds. Last Friday, a front passed through with thunderstorms dropping about 11mm of water on our campus. We've had 20.6 cm of precipitation since Sept. It's clear and crisp now.
2001-01-01 We've all been on vacation since December 22 so reporting begins again on January 5. Continued cool, lows in the single digits with highs in the the upper teens Celsius. Over weekend skies were overcast and scattered showers occurred. Skies generally partly to mostly cloudy with stratus and cumulus clouds. You need a jacket all day.
2000-12-11 The weather in Israel over the past week was quite interesting but also unusual. There were days of rain and terrible storms and there were days of sun and heat. On Saturday there was a rain-storm that flooded some low land areas in Israel. About six roads were closed down, caused by the terrible streams of water pouring down mountains, and other high places. There were terrible thunderstorms and graphs showed that there was about 1 to 2 centimeters of rain. About a cm of precipitation fell after the storm. There was cool and generally dry weather that followed the storm. Lately there was no rain but it weather stations have said that it was soon to come.
2000-12-03 The temperature was was a little cold. You needed to wear long pants and a sweater, and maybe a jacket. When it was sunny you could have worn long pants and a shortsleeve shirt. Clouds we have seen this week are, Cumulus, Thunderheads, Cirrus and Stratus. During a trip to the south, we saw flooding and heavy rain in the desert. 7 centimeters in the city of Eilat in four hours. We received our T-shirts today and they are AWESOME! Jodie Rosenberg
2000-11-27 More cool generally dry weather. We did get our first day of complete overcast last Saturday. What a nice change of pace to all the sunshine we have (eat your heart U.K.) About a cm of precipitation fell. No effect on the Sea of Galilee. The government announced they are stepping up pumping of saline water to avoid more pumping of the Sea of Galilee. The weather service is projecting average rain this winter. With our weather station, we'll be able to check this.
2000-11-20 More exquisite weather. Great for being outdoors. Very dry. Cool nights, warm afternoons. Lots of sun. Broken stratus and cirrus clouds in morning. We still need the rain badly!
2000-11-13 Another very nice week. Cool temperatures, low humidity. We even had an overcast day last Saturday with a bit of rain from some stratus clouds. We are seeing a lot of cirrus clouds. Yesterday, high cirrus made a beautiful solar halo in the afternoon.
2000-11-06 More gorgeous weather. Highs in the mid-twenties (Celsius) with lows in the mid-teens. Low humidity. Clear to partly cloudy. High cirrus and cumulus clouds. Although this is great weather for being outside, we need rain badly. The Israel Meteorological Service is predicting average rain this winter. The government is going ahead with plans to import water from Turkey in tankers. They are also planning on building two desalination plants. Oddly enough, there is very little publicity about water conservation.
2000-10-30 Weather continues to be pleasant. Warm days and cool nights. Dew occurs everynight. Generally clear skies with scattered cumulus clouds. It's great to be outside!
2000-10-23 Continued cool pleasant weather this week. Temperatures ranged from 12 degrees to 23 degrees. Scattered showers almost every day. Large thunderstorm dumped 5.7 cm last Wednesday. The Sea of Galilee rose 1 cm. We are way ahead of the average rainfall at this point and really need it.
2000-10-16 Much cooler temperatures this week. I actually wore a jacket to work. Clouds everyday, mostly cumulus and altocumulus. Some scattered light showers yesterday.
2000-10-09 We are definitely into fall now. We had nice thunderstorms early Saturday morning with great thunder and lightning. The down side is that the decorations in our sukkah (Jewish ritual booth for holiday of Sukkot) got soaked. A total of 7.2 mm in 2 hours. Evenings have remained cool and humidity is generally lower.
2000-10-02 Unfortunately, the political situation has not been nearly as nice as the weather. Heavy dew has been occurring most nights. We had a break in the humidity last Tuesday as a sharav (hot, dry winds from Saudi Arabia) condition arrived. Relative humidity dropped to 20% and the high temperature hit 37 degrees C. That passed in about 24 hours and we are back to the regular daytime humidity (70-80%). Evenings continue to be cool and pleasant with breezes. Continuing morning cumulus clouds which are increasingly lasting through the day.
2000-09-25 Great weather week! Finally some variation. We had a cold front pass through last Friday which brought some much needed rain (6 mm). It's been cool and dry since then. Been seeing cirrus, cumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cumulunimbus clouds. Very pleasant!
2000-09-18 Humidity has been lower the past few days. Much more comfortable. Nice morning cumulus clouds. High cirrus clouds in evening. Lots of sunshine. There's talk of rain this weekend but I'll believe it when I see it.
2000-09-11 The weather the past week has monotonously hot and humid during the day. We are starting to get some morning clouds which usually disappear by afternoon. Winds from the NW have been picking up in the afternoon . Evenings have been humid but pleasant.
2000-01-10It is soooo cold! We have been hit with a fifty year storm. It's been raining for three days straight. We've received about 8 cm rain. There have been waves of thunderstorms. We've had several bouts of pea sized hail. Our one ski mountain should be opening this weekend. Snow is a big deal around here. Temperatures have ranged from 5 Celsius to 15 Celsius. That is real cold for around here.
2000-01-03Nothing too special this week. It was dry until Wednesday. A storm dumped about 3 mm of rain overnight. Days have been pleasant and partly sunny. It's nice and warm in the sun. Temperatures ranged from 8 to 21 degrees Celsius.
