Sparrow begins to sing a requiem for a unique Florida
habitat The health of the Cape Sable seaside sparrow is
being used as an indicator of the state of the Florida Everglades
ecosystem. The sparrow lives only in the Everglades freshwater marl
prairie, and breeds there during the dry season. The species is
currently near extinction because its breeding has been disrupted
by the South Florida flood-control system. The health of the Cape
Sable seaside sparrow population will be monitored to judge the
effects of a new engineering plan to restore the health of the
swamplands.
