Spiders that hunt at night often have a special layer at the back of their big eyes. It acts like a mirror to bounce light back into the eyes. On a dark night, this reflected light makes the spider's eyes seem to glow!
Biologist clings to hope for marmots
Biologist clings to hope for marmots The Vancouver Island marmot is the only wildlife
species in Canada with a $2 million bank account, but the future of
the marmot is not secure. There are only about 70 animals left in
the wild, plus 14 in a captive breeding program on the Island.
Andrew Bryant, a biologist on the Marmot Recovery Team, says that
with rare species even subtle changes can have severe effects. The
biggest threats to marmots at present are clear-cut logging,
disease, and predators. 12 JULY 1999
