Endangered animal protected under ban
Endangered animal protected under ban The Jammu and Kashmir states of India are planning
to ban the trade in ‘shahtoosh’, a wool which comes
from an endangered Tibetan antelope called the ‘chiru’.
In order to obtain the wool, chirus are killed and skinned, and
their hides are sold for making shawls. The trade in shahtoosh has
been banned since 1979 under the Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species but the Indian provinces did not ban the
trade at that time as it is the livelihood of many thousands of
people. 30 JUNE 2000
