Humans need sun on our skin to trigger the production of vitamin D, which is necessary for building bones and teeth.
Danger, they're dropping like flies
Danger, they're dropping like flies Scientists have used fruit flies for many years in
the laboratory for genetic studies as they breed quickly and have
short life spans. Many generations can be studied in a short amount
of time. However, scientists have now discovered that fruit flies
also provide an ultra-cheap detection test for pesticides. A
biologist at the University of York, UK, has developed a test for
pesticides by placing fruit flies in a liquid sample. The amount of
time that it takes for a fruit fly to die after exposure to the
liquid helps scientists to determine the concentration of pesticide
in the sample. 30 OCTOBER 1999, P. 23
