Hole over city For the first time, the hole in the ozone layer
has stretched over a populated area. The hole was previously only
over unpopulated Antarctica and the surrounding ocean, but NASA has
found it now covers almost 30 million square kilometers - more than
three time the size of Canada! The hole has extended over the
southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas and is exposing residents to
