Hole stretches over city
For the first time, the hole in the ozone layer has stretched over a populated area. Previously, the hole was over Antarctica and the surrounding ocean, but now NASA reports that it covers almost 30 million square kilometres - more than three times the size of Canada! This extends the hole over the south Chilean city of Punta Arenas, and exposes the residents to very high levels of ultraviolet radiation.
