Did you know that chimpanzees use tools? Chimpanzees 'fish' for termites in termite mounds by stripping thin twigs of leaves and poking them into the tunnels in the mound. Termites will grab onto the twig and be lifted out to the chimpanzee's waiting mouth!
Managers flout conservation rules for forests
Managers flout conservation rules for forests Many people are wondering whether it is really
possible to both sell timber and to guarantee fresh water and a
clean habitat for animals. U.S. District Judge William Dwyer
recently ruled that the Forestry Service had failed to comply with
a mandate to fully survey 77 species of rare plants and wildlife
before cutting and selling the timber. An injunction was imposed to
stop the sale until the survey had been done and a ruling was to be
made to decide whether or not other lumber sales were to be
blocked. This ruling was a victory for the northwest forests and
was similar to a ruling in 1991 in which Dwyer shut down 1 million
hectares of logging when a company failed to fulfill requirements
to maintain the habitat of the spotted owl and other species. It is
believed that rulings such as these bring hope that some day all
commercial logging in national forests will be terminated. However,
there is also a worry that future timber sales will disappear in an
effort to save rare salamanders, mushrooms, slugs, mosses, lichens,
plants and the spotted owl. 11 AUGUST 1999
