Province's forestry review is flawed, forester
contends The provincial government is expected to start a
review of the province's policy on forestry practices. The
President of the Association of B.C. Professional Foresters, Nick
Arkle, recognizes the need for a review but is unsure whether the
review will result in the sort of policy reform that is actually
required. The Association would like to see a two- step review,
with the first step being consultation with the public and
interested parties to determine exactly what the people want from
the revised forestry policy package. The second step would be to
develop policies which fit in with people's expectations. Forest
communities, foresters and the public all look to the forests for
livelihood and enjoyment and B.C. is not managing them to their
full potential. A policy review is required, but it remains to be
seen whether changes meet the requirements of the
public. 14 OCTOBER 1999
