Relentless fires destroying Borneo's parched forests Huge forest fires have destroyed thousands of
hectares of trees in Borneo, including the Bukit Suharto forest,
adjoining jungle, and virgin forests which have never before been
tampered with. Despite heroic efforts, little has been salvaged,
and experts blame the devastation partly on the extreme drought and
partly on the negligent activities of people, particularly farmers,
plantation owners and the timber industry. 21 APRIL 1998
