Ugly bottom-feeder invades Great Lakes
Ugly bottom-feeder invades Great Lakes A commercial fisher has hauled in an ugly fish
from the waters of Lake Erie. This fish was 70 centimetres long and
weighed more than 17 kilograms, and had eyes on its underside! This
Bighead carp is an alien species from China, and is of the genus
hypophthalmichthys, which is Greek for "fish with low down eyes".
It is a plankton filter feeder, which grows very fast, and could
therefore cause a famine for other plankton feeders in Lake
Erie. NOVEMBER 17, 2000
