Skunk cabbage is one of the first plants to sprout in the springtime in the Northern Hemisphere. The plant itself is 20?C (76?F) warmer than the surrounding air, and it melts the snow around itself so that the shoots can sprout upwards.

Scientists have found that a substance in tart cherries can act as a pain reliever which is as effective as aspirin. These substances are called ‘anthocyanins’ and it is hoped that these cherry anthocyanins can soon be produced in a tablet form. Eating 20 cherries a day is equivalent to taking 1 or 2 aspirin a day.
