Canadian scientists are developing the "Stevi Rebaudiana" shrub, which is native to South America, as a commercial crop. The shrub contains seven sweetening compounds, some of them more potent and lower in calories than sugar. $10 million US dollars of stevia was sold last year as a dietary supplement.
