With people come plagues
With people come plagues Concern for the health of Antarctica's wildlife
has prompted scientists to press for international agreements on
measures to keep dangerous foreign pathogens out of Antarctica. The
scientists' concern stems from outbreaks of disease in native
wildlife, which they suspect has been caused by human
activity.
The proposal includes such precautionary measures as briefing all
Antarctic visitors on how to avoid spreading disease, certification
programs to ensure that products like poultry are free of dangerous
diseases when brought into the area, and making sure that all
facilities in the Antarctic have some form of sewage
treatment. 5 SEPTEMBER 1998, P. 4
