Worms may hold the secrets of eternal youth
Worms may hold the secrets of eternal youth The secret to to long life might lie in something
as simle as stopping rust. Researchers have been able to lengthen
the lifespan of nematode worms by nearly half simply by giving them
drugs aimed at stopping oxidation--the process that causes damage
to cells in the body. Oxidation is the chemical reaction that
causes metals to rust, but in cells, it can damage DNA, sometimes
leading to cancer, other diseases, and many scientists believe, to
the symptmes associated with aging. NOVEMBER 9, 2000
