Archimedes' 'Eureka!' manuscript for sale
Archimedes' 'Eureka!' manuscript for sale On 29 October 1998, Christie's auction house in
New York will sell one of the earliest surviving manuscripts of the
works of Archimedes. The manuscript is a palimpsest from which the
original text by Archimedes was removed so the vellum could be
reused. The original text was recovered using a variety of
techniques. It contains Archimedes' descriptions of some of his
work, including that which is said to have made him run into the
street naked and shouting 'Eureka'. The manuscript is said to
possibly be the most important scientific codex ever
auctioned. 3 OCTOBER 1998
