University cartographer discovers what's believed to be oldest
map of the moon Dr Phillip Stooke, a cartographer at the
University of Western Ontario, has discovered what is believed to
be the oldest known map of the moon. It was found carved into the
wall of a tunnel in an artificial hill at Knowth, County Meath,
Ireland. It is believed to have been carved about 5,000 years ago
by men of the New Stone Age. Previously, the oldest known map of
the moon was one drawn by Leonardo da Vinci in about
1505. 23 AUGUST 1999
