In 1960, British biologist Alister Hardy proposed that humans evolved from apes when they descended from the trees to live in the sea, not on the plains as usually supposed. He believes that once in the water, humans lost body hair and developed a thick layer of body fat to keep warm. "This explains why new-born babies can float, unlike other apes," said Sir Alister.
