Beetle invasion threatens Banff Pines
Beetle invasion threatens Banff Pines The mountain pine beetle has infested 500 pines in
Banff National Park this year, up from 10 in 1998. Members of
Alberta's Environment Department are afraid that the growing
population will kill thousands of trees. Combating the spread of
these insects poses a challenge due to park policies of letting
natural processes occur as much as possible. The danger to the
trees is due to blue stain fungus, which is carried by the beetle,
and disrupts the tree's internal water flow. SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2000
