Locust infestation threatens Alberta
Locust infestation threatens Alberta The risk of a locust infestation has been listed
as severe in many parts of Alberta and western Saskatchewan in the
wake of near-drought conditions. An entimologist (insect
specialist) said that the grasshoppers love extremely dry
conditions and could hatch in record numbers. The last time that a
plague of locusts descended upon Albera, black clouds of the
grasshoppers stripped pastures bare, turned trees black, and forced
farmers to close community pastures. This year, pest management
officals are watching carefully to make sure that farmers and
pesticide suppliers are aware of the possibility of severe
infestations throughout the summer. MAY 22, 2001
