The Spinners

The Spinners
A spider's secret could revolutionize the chemical industry by introducing new, eco- friendly techniques. The way spiders make the silk fibres of their webs is what interests Christopher Viney, a chemist at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. A spider's silk is one of the strongest materials on Earth. Understanding how spiders make their silk could help industry to use more natural techniques. Strong manmade fibres are usually made under conditions which use many chemicals. However, spiders make their silk by using nothing more than protein and water. The more researchers learn about the spider's silk they more they marvel at the spider's secrets. One day they hope to unravel the mystery of spider silk and learn how to make similar materials which will be stronger than any yet made.
