Skunk cabbage is one of the first plants to sprout in the springtime in the Northern Hemisphere. The plant itself is 20?C (76?F) warmer than the surrounding air, and it melts the snow around itself so that the shoots can sprout upwards.

Their skills at ridding the land of vegetation are now being used in the USA to rid woods and fields of excess plants and seedlings. Their constructive nibbling is helping to reduce the threat of forest fires and to trim thick bush areas without the need for dangerous herbicides or mowers.
