China Rescues Bears For thousands of years, Asians have harvested bear
bile to treat fever, liver illnesses and sore eyes. But as a first
step in wiping out the age-old practice, China pledged yesterday to
rescue 500 bears held in cages for their bile. Putting an end to
the once-lucrative extraction business means the rare Asiatic black
