Dumbo's big ears are really cool! Scientists Polly Phillips and James Heath have
looked into Dumbo's big ears and found that they helped to keep him
cool. Elephants all keep themselves cool by pumping blood through
their ears to lose heat. So not only did Dumbo's ears let him fly,
they would help him lose the heat built up by flying and prevent
heat stress. They also found that his metabolic rate would have
been 10 times faster while flying than while resting. However,
because he would lose so much heat through his big ears, it is
possible that Dumbo would have died from hypothermia while resting
