Bread would be flat if it weren't for farts. Little critters called yeast are put into bread dough. When the yeast eats the sugar in the dough, it gives them carbon dioxide gas. They fart the gas which causes the bread dough to rise. Think about that the next time you bite into a peanut butter sandwich.
Better nets save fish
Better nets save fish The federal government is developing new standards
for fishing in an attempt to reduce "bycatch." Many fish are
accidentally killed by fisherman targeting other species that live
in the same area. For example, shrimp and eulachon both live near
the ocean bottom and bycatch of eulachon in 1997 was estimated at
100 tonnes. New nets have been developed that have aluminum grids
inside to let the shrimp pass through, but prevent the eulachon and
other fish from being caught in the net. Since these nets were made
mandatory last year, the bycatch had been reduced by 80%. New
salmon nets and handling procedures are also expected to
significantly reduce the accidental killing of endangered coho
salmon. FEBRUARY 8, 2001
