Most butterflies live for only a few days nor weeks. But postman butterflies live for up to 9 months because they feed on pollen as well as nectar. Pollen is rich in nutrients, especially proteins.
Tobacco plants engineered to clean up TNT
Tobacco plants engineered to clean up TNT British scientists have developed a potentially
beneficial use for the tobacco plant. It is possible that
genetically engineered tobacco can be used to clean up soil that
has been contaminated with explosives. Scientists have identified a
bacterial gene that can produce an enzyme that will break down TNT
into harmless components. The genes are then transferred into
tobacco plants and are planted in soil with a high level of
contaminants. The engineered tobacco plants are able to break down
the TNT much quicker than normal plants.
