When ice covers lakes, there is less oxygen to breathe, and most fish sink to the bottom. They remain very quiet but awake. Carp, however, flap their tails to cover themselves with mud and they go to sleep. When the lake ice melts and the oxygen levels rise they awaken.

Homes in Iran are being invaded by snakes, many of them poisonous, looking for a relief from the extreme outside temperatures. Iran has, for the second year in a row, been affected by temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius, causing a drought and the death of 800,000 head of livestock.
