A hummingbird can beat its wings at 50 beats per second, which is so fast that it looks like a buzzing blur in the air. Hummingbirds are also able to zoom up to a flower at 40 kilometres per hour (24 miles per hour) and stop in an instant.
Turtles trawled
Turtles trawled The world's largest nesting colony of Olive Ridley
turtles has been almost completely wiped out by trawlers fishing in
the Bay of Bengal off the coast of India. Environmentalists say
that the problem occurs when the trawlers use their fishing nets.
These not only prevent the females from getting to the nesting area
but also drown almost every turtle caught in them. The fishermen
have now been ordered to use turtle- friendly nets, but
environmentalists report that very few are doing so. 11 JULY 1998, P. 24
