Scientists say that a group of Alaskan killer whales has recently started eating the region's sea otters, possibly contributing to an overall change in the coastal ecology of the region. Some colonies of sea otters in the area have been almost wiped out, and the total sea otter population of the area has recently declined sharply. As a result, the population of sea urchins, which the otters usually keep controlled, has exploded and is negatively affecting kelp beds. The kelp beds are the base of the coastal food web.
