Algae stole our carbon
Algae stole our carbon European oceanographers say that they have found
part of the answer as to why there is less carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere than there should be. The oceanographers have discovered
that a large amount of carbon dioxide is being absorbed by algae
which lives in the oceans near Spain. Some of the carbon dioxide
being absorbed by the algae is being recycled into the air, but
some of it disappears into the ocean when currents push the algae
into open waters where it dies of cold. When the dead algae sinks,
it takes the stored carbon with it. 8 MAY 1999, P. 15
