Corals Play a key role in cold waters
Marine scientists are taking their first, up-cloe look at deep sea corals found on the ocean floor off Nova Scotia. Corals, which resemble small trees but are really a colony of simple organisms living on the ocean floor have long been viewed as a tropical phenomenon. Sophisticated ocean mapping techniques and subsea video cameras have recently shown large coral reefs in cold northern waters where the organisms are believed to be as old as 500 years. Canadian fishermen have come to believe that the deep sea corals provide essential habitat for cod, redfish and several other marine species. They say the devastation of the coral colonies caused by heavy bottom dragging fishing gear can be linked directly to the decline of major fisheries.
