Siberian city's flood fears ease as water levels begin to drop
Russian bomber planes and helicopters destroyed a massive ice blockage yesterday that had forced floodwaters toward the Siberian cit of Yakutsk. Warplanes were used to save Yakutsk, the capital of this region. They dropped dropped 72 bombs over the past few days on a huge ice floe 56 km from the city, turning it into a sea of muchy ice. The water level has dropped since the bombing, which was a huge relief to the residents, as the city has not seen flooding this severe in the last half-century. A 9.4 meter dam was quickly built out of sand, and this helped divert much of the first wave of water that rushed past the city at 9.1 meters high. There is another wave that is anticipated, bu the Emergency Minister believes the dam will hold back the waters again. Last week the flooding River Lena destroyed most of the upstream town of Lensk, forcing the emoval of most of its 30,000 residents. The news reported that five people drowned, and two were still missing.
