Young salmon escape fish farm's net pen

Young salmon escape fish farm's net pen
The first major escape of fish into British Columbia's waterways occurred this year, with 30,000 farmed female chinook salmon getting away. The salmon were kept in a net pen in Kyuquot Sound where a boat propellor tore the net, allowing the escape. This raises again the issue of net pens. Many environmentalists believe that they are not strong enough and are concerned that escaped farmed salmon will breed with native species and alter the gene pool.
