Did you know that there are a group of frogs in South America known as 'poison-dart frogs'? There are different types of frogs within the group but most of them are brightly coloured and have black spots. They are dangerous to touch because they have poison on their skin. Native people in the area used to rub the poison onto their arrows before hunting.
More is less
More is less Some groups of animals, both in the wild and in
captivity, may face extinction due to inbreeding. New research
indicates that introducing new animals into populations of rare
species may harm the diversity of their genes rather than increase
it. If the new animals do not have DNA that is different enough
from animals already present, the genetic diversity of the
population may decrease and malformed or unhealthy offspring may be
born. 20 NOVEMBER 1999, P. 6
