White Spruce Population Dynamics in Spruce Woods Park, Manitoba

Investigating impacts of climate change on boreal forest ecosystems
Recent investigations of changes in the world's climate show that over the last century the Northern Hemisphere has experienced warming trends of up to 5 degrees Celsius, and these temperature changes are believed to be continuing. Warmer temperatures will influence boreal forests through reduced soil moisture and there is concern that boreal forest areas will eventually experience prairie-like conditions. It is crucial that boreal species such as white spruce trees are investigated in order to discover their population dynamics. Researchers from the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, are gathering information which will help scientists understand how future climate change will affect the distribution and growth of boreal forests throughout the course of the next century. back to the list of projects
