Managing a Boreal Owl Population in British Columbia
Effects of timber harvesting on a boreal owl population.
Boreal owls have only recently been discovered in the Kootenay Mountains, British Columbia, Canada. Little is known about these owls regarding their habitat requirements and their response to alterations of their habitat, such as those made by logging. Global Forest is supporting researchers from Mirkwood Ecological Consultants Ltd., British Columbia, and the University of Wyoming, U.S.A., who are attempting to understand the interactions between the owls and their habitat. These researchers are producing guidelines to assist forest managers to protect boreal owls.
