Rock elm is a medium-sized (>25 m) tree. A distinguishing feature of this species is the prominent corky wings on its twigs. Dutch elm disease has affected the abundance of this tree. Rock elm fruit is edible and has a filbert-like flavour.

Slippery elm is a medium-sized (>20 m) tree. Its inner bark is fragrant and edible. First Peoples used the bark for a poultice, for throat infections and as a cough remedy. Slippery elm seeds are a valuable food for many birds and mammals.
white elmUlmus americana L.
White elm can reach a size of more than 35 m. It flowers before leafing in the springtime, and its fruits (samaras) are almost mature before leaves appear. Its leaves are toothed and asymmetrical at the base. These are characteristic features of elms. Dutch elm disease, which is caused by a fungus carried by both native and introduced bark beetles, was brought to North America in about 1930 and has decimated this species.
