Disciplined dieters
Disciplined dieters Unlike humans, European robins refuse to overeat,
even when faced with plenty of food. A behavioural ecologist at the
University of Bristol trained robins to collect food from on top of
a scale and found their weight change only about 0.01 grams. The
birds need fat reserves to survive cold spells, but still need to
be light and fast enough to escape predators. They seems to know
exactly what this balance is and how to maintain it. FEBRUARY 28, 2001
