When ice covers lakes, there is less oxygen to breathe, and most fish sink to the bottom. They remain very quiet but awake. Carp, however, flap their tails to cover themselves with mud and they go to sleep. When the lake ice melts and the oxygen levels rise they awaken.
Tainted catch
Tainted catch It has been found that when fed food contaminated
by PCB, stickleback fish spend more time rolling the food around in
their mouths before eating it. Researchers say that this altered
behaviour could affect other aspects of the fishes' lives, as more
time is spent eating it rather than mating or evading
predators. APRIL 10, 1999, P. 19
