When ice covers lakes, there is less oxygen to breathe, and most fish sink to the bottom. They remain very quiet but awake. Carp, however, flap their tails to cover themselves with mud and they go to sleep. When the lake ice melts and the oxygen levels rise they awaken.

It has been found that when fed food contaminated by PCB, stickleback fish spend more time rolling the food around in their mouths before eating it. Researchers say that this altered behaviour could affect other aspects of the fishes' lives, as more time is spent eating it rather than mating or evading predators.
