Biologist clings to hope for marmots
The Vancouver Island marmot is the only wildlife species in Canada with a $2 million bank account, but the future of the marmot is not secure. There are only about 70 animals left in the wild, plus 14 in a captive breeding program on the Island. Andrew Bryant, a biologist on the Marmot Recovery Team, says that with rare species even subtle changes can have severe effects. The biggest threats to marmots at present are clear-cut logging, disease, and predators.
