One of our fellow primates is missing
The Waldron’s red colobus, Procolobus badius waldroni, a loud mouthed, red cheeked monkey from the rainforests of Ghana and the Ivory Coast, has become extinct. The last primate extinction occurred in Jamaica in the early 1700’s with the disappearance of Xenothris mcgregori, a monkey similar to the capuchin monkey used by organ grinders. Deforestation and hunting are responsible for this latest primate extinction. In West Africa, many animals are being trapped and shot to supply "bush meat" to urban restaurants.
