Tough endangered-species law demanded

Tough endangered-species law demanded
631 Canadian scientists have sent a letter to Jean Chr‚tien asking for stronger legislation for Canada's endangered species. The letter is the third attempt in 3 years to get the Canadian government to protect vulnerable species. Ottawa tried to introduce a bill in 1996, but it was terminated in 1997 when an election was called. That bill only required that the government protect the animals that lived on federal lands. Scientists are worried about animals that migrate, such as the grizzly bear, that are protected in the U.S. but are in danger if they cross the border. Both the U.S. and Mexico have had strong legislation to protect endangered species for 25 years. David Schindler, a scientist at the University of Alberta, believes that Canada should be ashamed of the way they have handled the issue of endangered species.
