The next time you see a tree stump take a closer look at its rings. Every year most trees produce a light-coloured ring of spring growth and a dark-coloured ring of summer growth. If you count only one ring not both rings, you will be able to tell how old the tree was when it was cut down.
Compost is a natural-born killer
Compost is a natural-born killer Garden compost can sometimes eliminate plant
disease, according to researcher Dennis Pitt. Studying diseases of
important crops in southwest England, Pitt's team mixed cultures of
disease organisms into soil, adding different types of compost, and
then grew various crop plants. This work showed a significant
reduction in plant disease. Organisms in compost act in several
different ways to help suppress the growth of disease-causing
bacteria and fungi. 21 SEPTEMBER 1996, P. 25
