Extinction point Researchers studying fish which have been
genetically engineered to carry the human growth hormone gene say
that these fish could cause local wild populations of the species
to become extinct if they were introduced into them. The
genetically modified fish would out-compete the normal fish for
mates and would produce more offspring. However, the modified fish
have a smaller rate of survival to reproductive age than natural
fish, and so would eventually cause the populations to dwindle and
