When manure is spread on fields, unhealthy parasites can often find their way into streams and contaminate them. Researchers looking for a solution to this problem are now considering using a pasteurisation process which mixes recycled materials, such as cement, lime kiln dust, coal ash, and gypsum with the manure. This combination sets off a chemical reaction which produces heat, ammonia, and a high-ph environment which could kill the bugs infecting the streams.
