Weight of numbers

Weight of numbers
The success of a group of organisms is usually determined by counting the number of different species within the group. However, a new method of calculating the abundance of species within a group by using the mass (weight) of organisms, rather than counting their numbers, has revealed new information. Scientists counted the weights of small invertebrates called bryozoans and found that one species within the group accounted for most of the group's weight. This means that counting the weights of species can give more insight into their rise and fall over long periods of time.
