Some trees can move water from their roots to their leaves at a rate of 25 millimetres (1 inch) per second.
Woodwork
Woodwork German scientists say that they have created a new
material which contains all of the best qualities of wood, but that
is mouldable like plastic. Wood is composed of long cellulose
fibres and shorter molecules of "lignin". The cellulose gives the
wood strength and the lignin provides stiffness. The new material
is made by combining cellulose fibres with lignin and then
processing the mixture through a moulding apparatus. This process
enables the new material to be moulded to any shape
required. 6 NOVEMBER 1999, P. 20
