Beware the tree killer
Beware the tree killer The arrival in North America of the Asian
long-horned beetle could pose a major threat to hardwood forests.
The beetle adults feed on leaves and branches and excavate grooves
in trunks and branches to lay their eggs. When larvae hatch they
bore into the heartwood, which leaves the tree open to secondary
infection so that the tree usually dies within two years of
infestation. The beetle was transported to North America in wooden
packing materials, and infestations have been found in various
areas of North America. Since the beetle reproduces inside trees,
it cannot be killed with insecticides and other methods, such as
traps, must be used to combat infestations. 12 DECEMBER 1998
