Scientists warn that higher temperatures in Alaska are enabling pests such as caterpillars and beetles to ravage the forests. In the past 5 years, budworm caterpillars have been munching their way through 40,000 hectares of Alaska’s forests, and the spruce bark beetle has killed 1.3 million hectares of sitka/white spruce hybrids. Numbers of the caterpillars and beetles have been found to rise after warmer years and these insects, along with forest fires, pose a serious threat to the world’s northern forests.
