Breathing is something we all do unconsciously. Without oxygen, we would die. Plants producing this life-sustaining gas churn it out as a by-product of photosynthesis, but exactly how they do it is a little puzzling. Chemists at Yale University have now created an artificial version of a plant's oxygen machine as a way to learn more about how plants split water molecules and generate oxygen. The researchers hope that understanding this technique will eventually lead to new ways of harvesting the power of the sun and producing oxygen and hydrogen, the gas which may be the fuel of the future.
